1.0 out of 5 stars where U2 becomes completely irrelevant, June 6, 2005
By
This review is from: All That You Can't Leave Behind (Audio CD)
Worst U2 album. Really boring MOR s**te. Lacks any sense of experimentation. Mediocre songs, boring arrangements & bad lyrics. Bono's voice is in bad shape and he sounds like he's having a mid-life crisis, which is a drag to listen to.

The only rocker on the album is "Beautiful Day." With the exception of that track Edge doesn't contribute any distinctive riffs or parts, which is an integral part of what made U2 interesting. "Wild Honey" has to be the worst song they've ever released. It sounds like f**king Rod Stewart! And what the hell is Bono doing during the bridge? Howling out of tune like a dog that's just been kicked? "Walk On" and "When I Look at the World" are U2 parodies.

It's really depressing to hear these guys "return" to what U2 is supposedly all about or some nonsense, in order to maintain their status as "the biggest band in the world." What's the point of being "the biggest band in the world" when you make such c**p music? G*ddamn egos!

Let's face it, "Joshua Tree" was the last album on which U2 still had a truly singular sound which set them apart from their contemporaries. Beginning with "Achtung Baby" everything they've done has been a reaction to the template they set during the 80s, and they haven't been able to reinvent or redefine themselves in a really convincing way. During the 80s they were in their own sort of alternate universe where the rest of the rock/pop world was alien. That ended with "Achtung Baby" when they started picking up all sorts of overt influences (from "industrial", hip-hop, Madchester, My Bloody Valentine, etc.). Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed their 90s stuff - I actually think "Achtung Baby" is their most consistent album - but the mystique of their earlier work was no longer there. They should retire while they can still do it somewhat gracefully, or drop the populism bulls**t (like that's ever gonna happen) and get back to experimentation! Make another Passengers album or something! Take a tip from Radiohead. You've made enough money! Stop sucking, dammit!
