This review is from: AARP The Other Talk: A Guide to Talking with Your Adult Children about the Rest of Your Life (Paperback)
My husband and I found this book tremendously useful as a springboard to a discussion with our 3 adult children. Prior to our Other Talk, the kids each read the book and came equipped with thoughtful questions and comments. The result was a very positive interaction among all of us. A discussion that had the potential to be sad and maudlin turned out to be as entertaining and fun as it was productive and helpful. An unexpected, lovely outcome of our Other Talk turned out to be watching with tremendous pride as our adult kids rose to the occasion and conducted a really thoughtful conversaion laced with humor, dignity, respect, and love. In addition, our discussion created many "ripples" beyond our own family. Our children's spouses have ordered books for their parents and are encouraging them to get their own affairs organized and discussions started. Likewise, several friends and family members who heard our description of how smoothly and enjoyably our Talk went have expressed interest, and we have sent them books to get them started.
The other foundation for our discussion was that my husband had organized much of the financial, legal and medical material needed for the talk and had given each of the kids an outline of the way those materials were organized in our computer files. It made a huge difference in keeping us all on the same page, and I would highly recommend doing that in conjunction with reading and sharing the book.
We feel that in having this discussion now, we have done a wonderful thing for our kids---and they for us. Thank you, The Other Talk, for getting us launched.
