Good But Not The Best,
This review is from: Holiday Buzz (A Coffeehouse Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read all of the Coffeehouse Mystery series and have liked all of them. Some more than others. I liked this one, too, but for some reason it just didn't have the same "oomph" for me as some of the others.
For one thing I think it was more fun when Clare had to "get around" the police rather than be almost a cop herself. Her "in" with the NYPD takes some of the enjoyment out of her crime-solving. It's getting to be more like reading an actual police procedural than a cozy where the heroine has to find a way to show she's right and the police should take her seriously - which they rarely do. Now the cops ask for her input. Even the new dectective - who was supposed to be very difficult to deal with - eventually went along with Clare and her ideas.
Another problem for me at least, is that Clare herself is getting too used to taking risks, doing sort-of dangerous things and almost seems blase about hunting down criminals. A bit preachy at times, too...
And finally, I might be in the minority but I've never liked Mike Quinn. Clare used to be pretty independant - and she still is to a degree - but now she is always thinking "this is how Mike would question the subject" etc. And she depends on him more and more. Not as lively as she used to be and a lot of it is her angsting over Quinn like a teenager at times.
Well, anyway, it's a good read although, as I said, I think some of the earlier books were better. A bit of crime for Christmas!
