This review is from: TomTom XL 350TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic and Maps Edition)(Discontinued by Manufacturer) (Electronics)
Several months ago I followed the advice of a national vendor and purchased a TomTom XL350 TM. As a technically savvy person with many years of experience using GPS devices, I looked forward to using this new product. Imagine my surprise when this newly released device proved unacceptable. Imagine my greater surprise when I discovered to my dismay that TomTom customer service is not helpful to the point of arrogance. Let me be more specific.
Favorites cannot be edited. Indeed favorites in their full glory including street address numbers cannot even be displayed. Customer service confirmed these observations and told me the only way to correct an error is to delete and reenter it. If for some reason one should like to see the address, for example if the street number has been lost, you are simply out of luck.
The touch screen is extremely inaccurate. For example, if you wish to change the zoom setting and you do not touch the screen exactly in the plus or minus button, something totally unexpected and undesired will occur. Customer service suggested I use a pointing device to touch the screen but they do not supply such a device and nowhere in their literature do they suggest that one should be needed.
Setting up a route of travel can be done with great difficulty for a single intermediate waypoint. But if you wish to travel to more than two places you will have to stop and plan a new route each time. Customer service simply stated that this is a characteristic of the device.
If you wish to browse the map in order to locate a destination, you are likely to find a task which in principle can be accomplished but which in practice is nearly impossible. The map moves around in unexpected ways and destination points are established nearly at random.
If you wish to give the device to a friend or relative or, heaven forbid, wish to sell it, you will be unable to transfer ownership of the device as ownership is recognized by TomTom. Customer service stated that the new owner would have to use the original owner's identification and password. This is clearly a security violation!
If connected to a power supply which turns on and off with the ignition, the GPS will not turn on with the ignition. If on and with external power, the device will turn off after a 30 minute delay once the external power is turned off. Customer service stated that the device would not turn on but they also stated that it would not turn off. Customer service does not seem to know much about this device.
In 3-D mode the device will show travel toward the top. But in map mode, that is 2-D mode, the device will not track toward the top but will only show North toward the top. I understand that 3-D is the most commonly used mode but if one wants to understand what roads are in the area if one is looking for an alternative route around traffic, 2-D is preferred. Sadly TomTom has made it very difficult to use the 2-D mode.
Unfortunately I encountered a number of other unacceptable characteristics of this GPS but have already written more than you most likely wanted to read.
I found the characteristics of this device to be so remarkably poor and customer service to be so arrogant and non-helpful that I decided to eat the expense of the TomTom GPS and purchase a Garmin. All of the above cited unacceptable characteristics, both of the device and with customer service, have already proven to be non-existent with my new Garmin.

El Grande says:
Did you have the TomTom 9.150 software update on your unit? An earlier review, posted on 9/3/10, says that the update "fixed" most or many of the complaints you had listed.

Yes, I have the most recent software version which is indeed 9.150. Unfortunately none of the problems that I wrote of have been fixed. Please note that I have included customer service responses to many of the problems that I encountered.
