Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Synology DiskStation 4-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS411+II (Black) (Personal Computers)
UPDATE 10/29/2012: Unit has indeed been rock-solid and flawless and wonderful since I got the replacement mentioned in my initial review. Up to 5 stars. Very happy.
I'll start with the bad news. The topmost bay in my DiskStation must be empty when I power the unit on, or it won't turn on at all. Once it's on, I then have to hotplug the hard drive into that bay. This problem first started occurring a few months after purchase.
I set up an RMA with Synology, and after a bit of a delay, they reached out to me with a brand new unit to make up for said delay. Unfortunately, that brand new unit has a defective CPU fan! I asked if I could swap the fan out, but they warned me it was difficult. After a half hour of trying to disconnect the fan from the motherboard, I contacted them again and they're arranging to send me a third unit, and to pay for the returns of the first two.
Aside from the delay, customer service has been doing everything within their power to correct this situation.
The good: it's very quick, reasonably silent, feature packed, and just all-around a fantastic piece of equipment. I have 4 drives at 3tb each in RAID 10, and it's just so fast. And I don't have to worry about running out of room anytime soon!
The web interface is absolutely brilliant and so modern, and the iOS apps are wonderful.
I truly believe my hardware issues are isolated incidents, and that my two problems are merely coincidental. I previously had a DS209 from Synology and it was absolutely wonderful. No problems, was up for months at a time, with the only reboots due to software updates (which tend to be great). I've since resold it in favor of this model. I think this is a very well designed unit, and I'm impressed with Synology's customer service so far. Hopefully within a few days I'll have a flawless unit and will be happy again!
