3.0 out of 5 stars Beware - Gray Market, January 1, 2012
By
This review is from: Seiko Men's SKX007K Diver's Automatic Watch (Watch)
Prospective buyers should beware that when purchased from Mr. Watch this watch is a gray market watch and will not include a box, manual, manufacturer's warranty, or any proof of authenticity. I have done my best to verify that what I received was genuine and everything seems correct, but the watch itself came in a plastic bag shoved in a non-branded box and a "warranty" certificate from Mr. Watch, not Seiko. Given the frequency of fakes these days buyers who care about making sure their product is genuine probably want to look elsewhere.

I bought this watch from Mr. Watch also. It was a Christmas gift for my husband. The watch came in a very nice dark blue box with the Seiko logo stamped in gold letters on the top. There was a small square leather-like pillow with the Seiko logo on it inside the box and the watch was wrapped around this pillow. There was also small empty plastic bag with the SKX007K UPC stamp on it and small rectangular silver tag with the Seiko logo.

Also included in the box was a limited warranty/instruction manual. I did not pay much attention to it at the time, but after reading your review, I took another look at the warranty booklet. You are correct in that this is a Mr. Watch 1yr warranty and not the original Seiko 3yr warranty booklet.

I am going to be very upset if this turns out to be a gray market watch. How does one determine if this is a genuine Seiko?

You definitely bought a gray market watch, but that just means that it was bought wholesale from outside of Seiko's own sales and distribution system. It's probably genuine (or at least Mr. Watch probably believes it is), but of course the only way to make sure is to check it carefully against pictures and specifications, or have somebody take the back off and inspect the movement...

Thanks Tom.

My huband really likes the watch so I'm hoping it turns out to be a good watch.

I also just bought this watch from Mr. Watch directly and it came in a blue box with the white pillow, but neither the box nor pillow had Seiko branding. It did have the Seiko tag on the band and it was in a baggie that had the model number on it. The watch seems to be legit after I spent time watching vids and looking at pictures of them, but there is still the doubt in my mind. It is definitely gray market, but as long as the watch is real I don't really mind. It just would have been great if Mr. Watch would have been upfront about it being gray market.

It HAS to be gray market. This model isn't available in the USA anymore... they have been replaced by models that are functionally identical but have different hands and different markings on the face.

This is exactly right. All the 007's and the older models like the 031 were "gray market" watches that are not available in the states through typical outlets. That doesn't mean they're not gen Seikos (though fakes are always possible).
