5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great WOW Series, November 17, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Adobe Illustrator CS5 Wow! Book (Paperback)
The WOW CS5 book arrived in record time. I got it within three days of ordering it! That being said, I had CS4 but just used it for outline work. CS5 came out, so I installed the program and wanted to see what it could really do. I mostly use Photoshop Elements for my art, but I wanted to see what I can do with Illustrator. So I opened it up and started playing with it. After playing with the layers, gradient and other buttons, I found myself liking it. Love the new perspective mode! I went to the Adobe website and checked out the video on what it can do. As for the Wow book, I like the easy read and photos that go with each instructions. I did get confused at times on how to blend two items together using the blend button. Like I said, I'm not used to Illustrator, but I'll get the hang of it. One thing that bugged me was using the mesh mode. I found out I couldn't hit undo without deleting the whole layer and starting over. Guess I should have made a copy before I do that again! Anyway, I like the book and will go through it and see what else it has. Also the gallery has beautiful art and designs that shows you what you can do in Illustrator. Like the book and the price wasn't too bad either. Now I have to figure out what to do with my CS4 Illustrator book!

Hi Thomas.
Thank you for the GREAT review!
in case you missed this...
there is a tip on page 127 for recovering the path that you (accidentally) converted to a gradient mesh:

"Get back your (mesh) shape!
To extract an editable path from
a mesh, select the mesh object,
choose Object > Path > Offset Path,
enter 0, and click OK. If there are
too many points in your new path,
try using Object > Path > Simplify.
-Pierre Louveaux"

Hope this helps the frustration level!
all my best,

Thanks for the info. There's so much to read and store in my brain, I guess I skipped a line or two and over looked it. Do you look for sample art using illustrator? Glad you liked my review. I don't ever plan on screwing up again but if I did, I'll try your tip. lol. Have a great day.

HI Thomas.
Adobe Illustrator is way too complex to learn everything-- and as a result, it's impossible to memorize every workaround! The WOW! book is so packed with tips and techniques, that you're likely to see something new every time you pick it up. I did look and notice that that tip wasn't indexed-- I have to make sure that it is next edition!

And yes, we do take actual commercial submissions to the book, preferably in the form of links to web pages.

best,
