As un-boring as it can be.,

A book on learning to use photoshop could be really boring. This one isn't. Think of it like an encyclopedia of "how to do things in photoshop CS5", with each set of facing pages a different entry, teaching a different skill. Not intended to be read cover-to-cover, but rather as a quick reference for how to do something once you realize what it is you need to do. In this, the book is really good. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for someone with absolutely NO experience with photoshop, as there's not a great deal of continuity from one section to the next (since each is intended to stand alone), and you'd need to read a good bit of the book before really getting started. For anyone comfortable opening an image in the program and doing at least a few basic things, this guide will probably get you the rest of the way, and teach you all the other cool things CS5 can do. It doesn't include a DVD as some other books do, but files are available online if you'd like to "work along" with the examples in the book.
Note for photographers: this book is kind of generic, and covers all of photoshop's functions without a special emphasis on photo retouching and enhancement. If you're just looking to learn about photo editing, a better choice might be The Adobe Photoshop CS5 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter) or Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers: a professional image editor's guide to the creative use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC. Those two are both excellent.
