I cannot figure out what Brin was thinking as he wrote this. It's at best a hodgepodge that just doesn't work. At first it reads like "Stand on Zanzibar" only not nearly as well written with so many riffs taken off the original masterpiece that it should qualify as a re-mix. There are substantial temporal jumps but without the transportation to make them understandable. And the last third of the novel feels totally disconnected from the first 2/3rds.
Yes, there are a lot of interesting ideas. But many of them are simply told to us via didactic voices.
I think this was really three novels that Brin didn't have the discipline to finish. Or maybe the skill and craft because it's certainly lacking in craft.
I was greatly disappointed and I cannot recommend it.
