3.0 out of 5 stars A Unique Hero, April 29, 2012
This review is from: Love Beyond Sight (The Outsiders Book 4) (Kindle Edition)
For most of her life Eden Roan has heard a voice in her mind, a voice who communicates with her telepathically and helps her through some rough times. She suffers from premonitions and horrific dreams, and they're becoming worse.

Samuel Quinn is the voice in Eden's mind. It's the only way he has to communicate with her, the woman who is his mate, because he daren't let her see his ruined face. Meantime there is a demon on the loose, and he wants to destroy Eden and the group of friends who shelter her.

Rebecca Royce's Love Beyond Sight is book 4 in the Outsider series. I haven't read any of the other books, and this series is one where prior knowledge is imperative. This story mentions many of the other characters in prior and future books and some of the book is given over to scenes with these characters. There were times when I felt a little lost.

One of the things I really liked about this book was the hero. He was burned as a child, becoming horribly disfigured. His face is one of nightmares. He has magic that allows him to borrow a face to cover his own scarred face. The downside is that his borrowed faces never last long and he must continually borrow new faces.

His face itched. If he touched the skin, it would peel right off. He dug his fingers into his palm to give himself a new sensation to concentrate on as he searched around the shop for someone who would suit.

I really liked this aspect of the book and found it quite unique. I thought the hero's fear of the heroine seeing his natural face added nicely to the emotional tension between the hero and heroine. The resolution of this part of the story seemed a little easy and pat, and I mourned the lost chance for character growth.

Because this book isn't the end of the series, some of the plot strands weren't fully tied up. The plot actually disappointed me a little because I felt that everything was wrapped up too easily, especially in regards to the disfigurement of the hero's face.

That said, it was easy to read Love Beyond Sight because Ms. Royce has a great writing style. She has also given her cast of characters some very unique powers and characteristics. If you're a fan of paranormal and enjoy the fated mate type plot, do try this series. I would recommend starting with book one.
