Has it's pros and cons.,
This review is from: Light & Magic (Audio CD)
If you're already a fan of ladytron and liked their first effort, this should probably be welcomed with open arms. When I heard ladytron for the first time I was pretty suprised at the originality. I learned shortly after that basically ladytron is part of a whole genre of this kinda stuff called "Electroclash" that was apparently born and raised by art school kids.
That being said, you can tell by listening to any of their music that Ladytron are very comfortable in their own space. However, it also works against them in some ways. The songs themselves are catchy but hardly memorable, whereas the interesting concept behind ladytron lies more within its representation as a whole package and not so much on a song to song basis.
Much like bands like pizzicato five, the sheer self awareness they have of what they're doing tends to overshadow the actual music itself. I'm probably being a little harsh and overpicky here. I won't deny that when I had misplaced this cd, a smile really crept up on my face when I realized the disc was in a different case. If you're looking for 80's music made in the 21st century but with different versions of bad hair (mod look in exchange for mullets) You can hardly go wrong with this band in general. I think this sophmore effort from them doesn't really take their sound up a notch much, but considering their last album was a collection of songs written over a 4 year period (correct me if i'm wrong) It is very up to par with the songs on their first album that made it as good as it was.
