i have loved this book ever since i was a small child in the 70s. my mother was always buying books for us with odd stories and beautiful illustrations. to this day, it is one of my favorites.
when i was a child, i loved the intricacy of the illustrations and could spend hours looking into the details in the pictures. i loved the story, as well. it is all at once a little creepy and a gorgeous fairy tale.
the things about fairy tales, though, including the ones that disney has sanitized, is that they are all creepy. to those people who are saying to keep this book away from small children, etc ... i say it is no more disturbing than "hansel and gretel" or any other tale by the brothers grimm. and it is not any more disturbing than any other sendak book. from "where the wild things are" to "pierre" to "in the night kitchen". they are fantasy and fable and fairy tale all together.
children's imaginations are supposed to run wild. that's how they learn and grow.
and to the people who are made uncomfortable my sendak's use of nudity in a children's book ... i say get your head out of the sand. it is neither graphic nor gratuitous. by just having it here as part of the story and not a big deal, you take away it's taboo status. it makes it less interesting if it's something that's normal than if it's something that's hidden. there's nothing wrong with a little bare bum!
