Perfection In The Eye of the Beholder,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Caline Conspiracy (Kindle Edition)
A simple question: Are we too nuts about our pets? Mead suggests that, yes, sometimes we humans are. THE CALINE CONSPIRACY is set in the future, but the seeds of the question are present today with designer pets, genetic manipulation, cloning efforts and the bizarre nature of pet boutiques. Horrendous events happen around the world, but to really get people charged up about it and involved, have an innocent dog endangered.
Which is not to say that this story is lecture or some kind of lofty treatise about the skewed nature of people and pets. It's not. It's a story and it's a darned good one. With humor, genuine emotion, terrific characters and honestly depicted situations, Mead tells a rollicking, exciting tale about murder and the love people feel for animals, and how love, when taken to extremes, can be very dangerous.
Best parts? Morris the uber-cyberhacker; Aidra the not quite pulled together and sometimes too sentimental private eye; and Madeline, a genetically engineered perfect pet who is far, far more than she seems. And oh yeah, great dialogue, fast action, and a lively writing style.
Also recommended is FATE'S MIRROR and GOOD FENCES, both starring Morris the hacker.
