Healthy Alternative Eating Plans From Well-Respected Nutritional Author,
This review is from: The Virgin Diet Cookbook: 150 Easy and Delicious Recipes to Lose Weight and Feel Better Fast (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have not read any of JJ Virgin's other books--this was my first. The author identifies 7 common foods that she describes as "holding your health hostage": gluten, dairy, peanuts, eggs, corn, soy, and sugar and artificial sweeteners. The author explains that her work is not necessarily just for someone with known allergies, but could especially be helpful for someone with subtle food sensitivities and unknown intolerances.
The first part of the book explains exactly which foods to eat and which ones to eliminate for the first "cycle" of 21 days--3 weeks. The author suggests you can also stay on the first cycle until you are within five pounds of your goal weight. For the first week you have two shakes (vegan protein shakes with additional fresh ingredients) and one meal and an optional snack in order to jump-start your weight loss. For subsequent weeks you have one shake, two meals, and an optional snack. You also keep a food diary. The rest of part one explains why the author has chosen this way of eating. There is actually much more to this, and much more fine-tuning (including food swaps, meal timing, but my review is just a summary of the extensive material involved.
Part 2 is recipes. Some of the recipes do seem rather complex and include ingredients like coconut aminos, Malaysian red palm fruit oil, and monk fruit extract. Other recipes are much simpler. All include nutritional content.
Part 3 is comprised of actual three week meal plans. They are specialized for fast weight loss, vegan and vegetarian, diabetic and pre-diabetic, paleo/low carb, family meal plans, on-the-go meal plans, and on-a-budget.
The appendices include an index, a restaurant guide, resources for finding products, and helpful web sites.
The book is 400 pages long and unfortunately printed on inexpensive porous paper that will quickly tan and not hold up to harsh handling. For this reason I would be more inclined to buy the Kindle version. NOTE: Someone commented below that the pre-release copy I had may intentionally have different paper than the final copy. I do hope so; perhaps someone who has this information can comment. Thank you in advance.
