This review is from: Philips Norelco Speed-XL 8240 Men's Shaving System (Health and Beauty)
I have been using norelco shavers for many years and when the battery of my previous shaver started acting up (could barely hold enough charge for 15mins of shaving), I decided to buy another norelco.
I wanted a shaver that could be cleaned by directly rinsing the head and that was cordless. I settled on the 8240XL as it seemed a good price-performance trade-off. I'm not utterly disappointed but the 8240XL is certainly not a significant improvement over my older norelco that used the HQ5 heads. Specifically, while it shaves slightly faster (rotation speed of the heads is higher, which "fixes" a long-standing issue with norelco shavers compared to other brands), the HQ9 heads don't really provide a closer shave than the HQ5 heads. As a matter of fact, they do a substantially worse job on the upper lip (I have a hard beard) where after over a month of usage (so it's not a question of getting your beard used to it), I have so far not been able to get as close a shave as I used to with the HQ5 heads. I guess that the "fancier" layout of holes and slits on the HQ9 is just that, fancier and not better.
Except for this, the shaver is fine. It does clean easily simply by putting the head under running water. It recharges reasonably fast, and it appears that one charge does indeed hold 50 mins of shaving time. The one other shortcoming of notice is that there is no "low charge" indicator (my old shaver had a display showing the number of shaving minutes left in the battery, which was convenient), which makes knowing when you are about to run out of battery a bit challenging, especially since norelco recommends recharging the shaver only when the battery is nearly depleted. The next model up does have a low battery indicator, and I would recommend spending the few additional dollars for that model, simply because of the added convenience.
