Jesus Christ Superstar - an Amazon special,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (Special Edition) (DVD)
The "I don't know how to love him" song has haunted me for years and I thought that, someday, PBS would run Jesus Christ Superstar. Then I saw that I could get the DVD at a price I could afford so I did.
Basically it was a big disappointment. Most of the 'singing' was shouting and Judas, especially, was the worst. On the other hand, the emotion generated by the story's methodology was extremely well done. I still haven't been able to eject it from my mind.
Well worth the price for the unique experience.

How can a "big disappointment" be rated 5 stars?

In as few words as possible because I am very busy...
The acting was very well done - 5 stars
The music was, as I expected, well done and thoroughly enjoyed - 5 stars
The set was very different but relevant - 5 stars
The plot, on the other hand, was a big disappointment but I will not go into the why. I don't care to discuss religious beliefs.
I am sure, though, that you will enjoy it. Hence the 5 stars.

If you feel that the music was "well done" and that you "thoroughly enjoyed" it,why did you state in your review that " most of the 'singing' was shouting and Judas, especially was the worst"? That does not indicate that you enjoyed it and it certainly does not indicate that it was well done. You are entitled to feel however you want, but your review was confusing.
Furthermore, you cannot be sure I will enjoy it. In actuality, there is a good likelyhood I will not. I saw the quasi stage version released on video about a decade ago and I can't say I enjoyed it. I found the music impressive, particularly the voice of the actor portraying Judas. However,I simply find the subject matter annoying. I don't want to get into religious beliefs here myself but basically, while I tried to get past the story to enjoy the music I simply cannot. I get angry and that ruins the production for me. I am considering trying the 73 film anyway, mostly because JCS meant a lot to someone close to me when she was young.
