ALL STAINLESS STEEL,
This review is from: Farberware FCP412 12-Cup Percolator, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)Our primary purpose for buying a percolator was to get away from the ever present plastic in every other coffee maker on the store shelves. Our primary concern is exposure to plasticizers (such as bisphenol A or BPA) and hardeners in plastic products which are particularly relevant when plastics are in contact with hot liquids. We were astounded when we set out on our search for a totally glass or metal coffee maker, only to find that they are an endangered species! We began settling on the category of percolators but even then we found that many of them have a plastic or rubber seal where the stem of the percolator meets the bottom of the pot. In addition many of them have plastic lids. Again, hot plastic in direct contact with hot liquid to be ingested appears to be unavoidable in the coffee world, but we were determined to find an alternative.
My wife stumbled on this one in a store and took a peek in the box to assess its plastic parts. She found that this percolator has NO plastic in contact with the liquid. All surfaces in contact with your coffee are made of beautiful and hygenic stainless. That is why it commands a high price and it is well worth it. We bought it and haven't looked back.
One disadvantage we've found is that it uses a bit more coffee than a modern plastic coffee maker, perhaps becuase the filter and funnel system are more efficient at directing water through the coffee and extracting the flavor. However, we'll take it. This thing will last us for a long time without the added risk of plastic-induced genetic endocrine defects. In addition, its percolation is a nostalgic sound that is pleasing to the ear.
