Mine work great, I even bought more. I think some of the lower star reviews have more to do with peoples expectations. In my mind these are ACCENT lights! With two lights, stands and bulbs, plus the barn doors for 65.00(61.00 in my case) and a dimmer they seem to me to be designed for accent lighting.
As accent lighting these are 4 or 5 star. For lighting up your subject with nothing else, they are 2 star. For this price, configured the way they are with 150 watt low spectrum bulbs and with a dimmer it should be apparent to most these are for accent lighting only. And as accent lighting they are great for the price!
The cords are not very long and of course the stands are not that great, I could see some buying these just for the top portion and setting the stands aside. All these type of lights get hot, even expensive lights get hot. The difference is the more expensive lights have better cords, insulation and parts to handle the heat. So be careful and simply turn them off as much as you can. In other words don't leave them on and go to lunch, that's probably good advice for any light anyhow. And I would not never leave these lights on without someone being present.
If you need these as your main lighting source, pass on them. If you want some small accent lighting go for it!
I believe the bulbs have an E14 thread:
Search ebay for "120Volt JULIUS STUDIO Light Bulb E14 Base JDD150W Frost Bulb" or google "JULIUS STUDIO Light Bulb 120Volt E14 Base" and I think you will find them. Any link I give outside of amazon gets deleted.
ebay seems to sell several variations, 150 watt to 250 watt both frosted and clear.
Light bulbs included are:
E14 Screw Base
I give these 5 stars because they do what I believe they are designed to do and the price makes them a good value. If they cost 65.00 for each set up instead of for two set ups I would give them 3.5 stars because of the fairly poor stand quality. I paid 61.00 including shipping for two set ups so I have to give them 5 stars. I will update in a month or so.
NOTE AFTER many hours use: Okay after using these a bit I take that back about the stands. They may not be the best, but they are really good stands from a value standpoint. For value they are 5 stars for sure. Some pro stand cost 150.00 to 500.00 so compared to all stands they are 2.0 to 2.5 stars. Its tough to compare something like these to great lifetime quality stands that pro use on a pro set. Still, 61.00 for two stands, barn doors and bulbs, value has to be considered so I am still at a 5 star rating as a set. The bulbs are still going strong after 8 hours. I don't lug my stuff around so for people that do the stands are what they are and probably wont take tossing around very much. Then again wont these pay for themselves after one shoot? If they don't you are not charging enough!
