An Eagle > A Tyga (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars),
Of course if you are going to name your album the same title as a popular Eagles' song, you have to back it up with some quality. I would say Tyga got lucky with his last album Careless World: Rise of the Last King with a few hits, but here on Hotel California he fails to capitalize on his luck. There is no originality, the beats here are no different than what you would hear on a Lil Wayne album or such, the lyrics are boderline garbage, and the obvious is that he borrows lines from rap legends such as Snoop Dogg and Tupac. I'm not hating on Tyga. I thought he was hella underrated on that Young Money album, but this is not the same dude who I thought could hang with Drake, and Nikki.
Starting off the album with "500 Degrees" featuring Lil Wayne who had an album with that same title is avarage at best. "Dope" which appeared off one of his mixtapes earlier this year was a pretty good song as he pays homage to Snoop Dogg's "Deep Cover" with Rick Ross. Next is "Get Loose". The beat is generic and the rhymes are terrible as he says "Walk up to your B,told her I'll buy her//N****s talk s***, pull out the fire" Thats just one of the many horrible lines in this song. "Diss Song" has a pretty nice beat as talks about a friend who he had a fallout with. Its a pretty solid song overall. "Hit Em Up" where he uses a memorable name from a Tupac song and lines from a Snoop Dogg song. Unfortunately he his outsined by Jadakiss without even trying. Tyga and Wiz both fall on "Molly" with more bad rhymes (ie. Bands all in my dollars,I'm everywhere, it's poppin'//Can't fall in love, I got options, I'm high school, that's college...) on what could have been a good song. "For The Road" is a bump and grind song with Chris Brown. Here Tyga put a little more effort in this song, making it sound decent. "Show You" with Future is another bad love song. Here Tyga's voice with the beat sounds like a robot. Future's apparance doesn't make things better. "It Neva Rains" is an obvious interpolation of Tony Toni Tone's song of the same name and features The Game. The song really goes nowhere at all as you don't receive any quality from either artist. Again another potentially good song wasted. "M.O.E." again features Wiz Khalifa. This time Wiz outshines Tyga but thats not too saying much. "Hijack" featuring 2 Chainz is straight garbage. Unfortunately "Get Rich" isn't much different either, nuff said. "Enemies" is an improvement over the past two songs, but here you can tell the obvious points he tries to sound like Lil Wayne. "Drive Fast Live Young" is an obvious attempt for a closer for the album. The song is decent at best, but once again Tyga's subpar lyrics are hard to take in (I admit the hook is catchy to me...a guilty pleasure).
The bonus material on here isn't really necessary to get. "Palm Trees" makes no sense if you hear the song. "Dad's Letter" is an okay song about how his father not being in his life and how it affected him. One of the few songs on here that is good. "Don't Hate Tha Playa" is another bad song. The last song "Switch Lanes" featuring The Game was also off a mixtape as the two go back and forth. To my suprise this is a good song as well as a good beat, but too bad its off the Well Done 3 mixtape that you can download.
Overall Hotel California as an album fails. Unimpressive is not even how to describe this album. Too many songs here has predictable and unthought out lyrics. Tyga falls into that category of after an artist comes out with a major label album, he or she feels they don't need to try anymore or exect the beats to carry them through the album (like Wiz Khalifa). The good, or should I say ok songs are few and far in this album. While not as bad as Lil Wayne's album that came out earlier this year, Hotel California proves that the YMCMB camp is falling apart in 2013. Somebody up there needs to find a way to help Tyga pen better lyrics if he plans on having a thrid album from the label. If you have a reservation for Hotel California, I highly recommend canceling it ASAP. Peace.
