Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Scat (Hardcover)
Shame on ME for not having read it first, but I purchased this for my 8-year-old daughter who is a voracious and advanced reader. This book (and other children's books by Hiaasen) came very highly recommended. However, my daughter got very upset the first time she saw the word "damn" used and even more upset when she ran across the word "dumbass." Obviously it was a little bit of an overreaction on her part, but understandable for a child who has been told these words are bad.
I am a great fan of Hiaasen's work, but in hindsight--given the subject matter of his novels--it seems like a preview on my part would have been wise.

As a school librarian, I always appreciate other readers' concerns, so please keep reviewing. One thing that does surprise me, and not just from this review and this book, is that swear words become upsetting but people getting killed or getting their arms blown off seems to be OK. It's a strange world we live in!

Well, we all have a right to our opinions but 'heavens to betsy' I'm glad you were not my parent. Who knows how damaging my inevitable, escapist teenage revolt would have been. Hold on tight!... you are in for a storm of your own making!

And we all have the right to bring up our children as we see best. If this reviewer wants to set the bar high, more power to her.
