Stiles, Wayne. Going Places With God. Regal. 2006, 173 pp.
It is not often that one finds a book that is creative and clever, and at the same time filled with substance. Going Places With God by Wayne Stiles is one such book. The subtitle is " A Devotional Journey Through the Lands of the Bible". It delivers on its promise.
Each day takes you to a specified geographical area mentioned in the Scriptures, explains what took place there, and gives a few brief devotional thoughts based on the exposition. It concludes with a moving prayer and an excellent quotation. The quotes are spiritually edifying and diverse, ranging from Augustine to Charles Swindoll and many others in between. This book also has some nice photos of the Holy Land, and some helpful maps.
The second section of this book entitled, Confessions of a Pilgrim: a Travelogue is worth the price of the book. It recounts some humorous and yet insightful stories from Mr. Stiles' own journeys to the Holy Land. In an age of blogging, Internet web cams, and an overabundance of narratives, this one is well worth reading. What sets it apart from all the others is that theses stories and insights (as well as the daily devotionals) are rooted in good theology and Mr. Stiles is so unpretentious about the whole thing. His desire is to point the reader to God not to engage in spiritual voyeurism.
This excellent book concludes with some challenging comments about the value of learning Biblical geography and even journeying to the Holy Land. Mr. Stiles' doctoral research revealed the following:
· 97% surveyed said that taking a course in biblical geography improved their understanding of the Bible.
· 98% of those traveling to Israel reported that the journey provided far more than what books ever could.
· An astounding 99% agreed that experiencing the Holy Land had strengthened their spiritual life.
This book is a first rate devotional packed with humor, spiritual gems, and a good deal of insight on the geography of the Bible. I look forward to more works from this author.
