5.0 out of 5 stars WELCOME BACK BONNIE RAITT!!!!!!!!!!!, April 10, 2012
This review is from: Slipstream, Bonnie Raitt (Audio CD)
I've had some time to live with the new SLIPSTREAM collection, Bonnie Raitt's first outing in many years and my first thoughts to share.... Bonnie Raitt hasn't sounded this good in over 20 years, recharged for sure but the many losses she has been faced with are certainly factored in with these brand new recordings. Bonnie's vocals on Slipstream standout from the first cut right on down to the last piano notes. You'll find it all here from the bluesy rock, to rock and roll funky, to soul stirings and heartaches, some Rolling Stones touches, a dash of reggae, rollicking tunes with many shades of the best of Bonnie Raitt. Slipstream is made up of two distinct recordings, one with the great Joe Henry and his bandmates, the other Bonnie and her road warriors with new addition Mike Finnegan, both awesome sound experiences and meshed together with the talents of Ryan Freeland, who recorded and mixed Slipstream. There isn't a sour note here, this is a guitar cd at its core and Bonnie and that slide standout all over this outstanding record, but I couldn't leave out the wonderful keyboards touches. The song selection, writers, musicanship all standout, adding up to one of the best of the year and such a listening experience for the music lover. The soulful vocals of "Take my love with you", the beauty n' pain in "Not cause I wanted to", the Bob Dylan cuts "Million miles" and "Standing in the doorway" transforms the listener with the vocal talents of Raitt. I've really enjoyed the Al Andeson/Gary Nicholson cut "Split decision", Bonnie just sinks her teeth into this rollicking piece of rock, as with the Stone'ish "Down to you". Gerry Rafferty being one of my favorites as a younger man in the late 70's has his "Right down the line" covered and its right out of the park perfect for Bonnie's vocal and guitar stylings, I'd love to see this take off and get heard on radio. Nice video for this song, it should reach an audience with its message of love, in spite of it all. "Ain't gonna let you go", is also a tour ready performance that is so blues inspired I can't wait to hear this out in the road, in fact many of these tunes will just blaze on stage. "Use to rule the world" has that funk and groove that showcase Bonnie and the band, tight and ready to go, right from the first cut to the end of Slipstream, this is pure Bonnie with all her many sides, a joyful, and at times melancholy ride through these times. Couldn't be more happy for Bonnie, this is a knock out punch for the musical community! I give this one a BIG A Excellent new cd
