Gaudy and garish - More like miniature Christmas ornaments than pearls.,

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I must say that I was dismayed when I first opened the box containing these pearls. The first thing that jumped into my head when I saw them was "Christmas ornaments." The colors are much more garish than pictured. I am sure that this must just be a matter of taste, but to me part of the beauty of pearls is the muted iridescence, which is not very apparent in this set, except in the one pair of white pearls. To me, this set just looks cheap.
I own other dyed pearls, and I love them, so it's not a matter a lack of familiarity with the look of dyed pearls.
The colors are listed in the product description. Let me translate:
"White" = white
"Pink" = peach
"Light Blue" = bright teal
"Mint Green" = bright yellow-green
"Gold" = yellow
"Lavender" = bright lavender
"Burgundy" = bright cranberry
The surface of each pearl is smooth-looking, with no obvious pits or swirls. In running the finger across the surface, a faint roughness can be detected on some, indicating either a rather shallow thickness of nacre, or slight damage done to the surface by the dying process.
To me the pearls appear small for being rated at 7-7.5 mm in diameter. Therefore, without measuring them, I would guess them to be closer to 7mm than 7.5mm.
I tugged on the pearls to try to determine if they are firmly attached to the setting, and they appear to be so. The backs are standard size, not microscopic.
If you are looking for brightly colored stud earrings, you may like these. If you are looking for soft muted pearly tones, you may well be disappointed in these. I vastly prefer my dyed Multi Color 7 Pair 8-9mm Pearl Earring Set from Orkyd pearls.
I received these earrings at no cost via the Amazon Vine Program. I do believe that had I paid for them, I would return the set.
Update, November 2011:
The product page was unavailable for a long time after I received these earrings. I just checked to see if it was finally available, and was shocked to see a list price of $59.00. NO WAY are these earrings worth that much money.

I completely agree with your review. I ordered these on a Lightning deal for $29; looking for a nice affordable selection of pearl earrings for my wife. She's not too into frilly or fancy things...just nice, simple and low-key. These are MUCH brighter than the pictures makes it seem.
