Great economic first set or add-on second,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lionel Santa Fe Scout Freight Train Set (Toy)
We bought the Polar Express Lionel FasTrack set last year and my kids love to sit and watch it go it circles and start and stop over and over so we thought it would be nice to get a second set to run in tandem.
I was really confused how this set worked compared to the transformer controlled set we have already. This set comes with the remote which directly controls the locomotive. The wall plug is a simple ac/dc plug which connects to one of the straight pieces of track. I haven't had a chance to figure out how or if you can use both trains on the same set of track, but I'm sure there will be limitations if they work simultaneously at all.
The locomotive is largely plastic, I don't imagine it will be a real collectors item. But given the comparative price of this set, you wouldn't expect that much. Bottom line, as the title says, this seems like a great way to get started with a basic train or a good set to add on to an existing RS-3 FasTrack set.
Got it all set up and my 3 year old was able to control the train no problem. Much faster learning curve than trying to teach my then 4 year old the forward, stop, reverse operation of the transformer based control system. Also, you have to be careful mounting and removing the train from the track, you're supposed to unplug the track when doing so or you'll get sparks. For good information on the compatibility questions, just Google Lionel Lionelchief, and you'll get the info you need.
Also, if you have a bigger space than the 40"x50" required for this set, it is probably worth purchasing some more track. This is a pretty small oval and might get boring fast.
