This review is from: XFX HD 7970 Black Edition 3 GB 1000MHZ GDDR5 Dual Mini DisplayPort HDMI DVI PCI-E (Personal Computers)
With a zillion models of the 7970 to choose from. I finally settled on this one. I had three XFX 5870's in one machine running tri-fire that I replaced with this one (They ran fine for years - no issue with XFX cards). It turns out that the video memory in tri-fire isn't additive so I still had only one GB of VRAM with the three cards. I have an HP 30" monitor that runs natively at 2560 x 1600 and I knew I needed more VRAM to run things smoothly at that resolution. 3 GB is a decent number for that. I've had every video card since the days of VooDoo1,2,3,5 and practically every ATI card since then.
I'm extremely fanatical about the visual quality of games and I want to run them smoothly at max resolution with all the smoothing and effects on high. That's a lot to ask, really even today at hi-res. I have an i7-3820 clocked at 4.6 GHz steady and that should drive just about anything. So what's it like? Well, this 7970 eats all three of the 5870's for lunch and spits out the leftovers. I mean this card is FAST! I'm a racing fan so I've bought into the development stage of 'Project Cars'. This is a great racing sim under development. I can run 2560 x 1600 at 8x AA (serioulsy), with enough of the other eye candy settings so high the small degrees of difference don't even show up. It runs like butter on a hot day. Up to and over 100 fps a second easily. The detail is impeccable. I am really amazed at the performance of this card. Glad I waited until the Ghz versions came out. I even bumped it up to 1050 Mhz and there are no artifacts. And does this run cool? Max of 65 C - that's just amazing. My 5870s would reach 90 C. And the fan on this is not really obtrusive either, even running with the side panel off. Crysis 2 is unbelievable - DX 11 version, hi-res texture package, 2560x1600 all settings on high, I run this game with v-sync on because of tearing but it never drops below 60 fps at those settings. Amazing.
Now for the best part - I pulled the trigger on this Friday afternon about 2:00 and requested next day delivery (I mean, what kid doesn't want to play with their new video card on Saturday morning - especially since there's no more Mighty Mouse on). I couldn't believe this thing was sitting on my doorstep at 9:30 the next morning! Amazing Amazon... it's really nice to see a company deliver on its promise these days. It seems when you check rush processing at some other e-tailer (I won't mention any names N-- E--)it actually takes longer to get.
So no regrets here. I've always run crossfire but I really don't think I need to with this. I'm going to try to post a clip from Crysis2 and some screen shots.

I just want to add I bought my XFX Black 7970 from Amazon. I don't see it available from Amazon today (3 days later). Amazon deserves the credit for the fantastic shipping.
