High quality wireless 7.1 dolby surround gaming headset with very minor drawbacks,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Skullcandy PLYR1 7.1 Surround Sound Wireless Gaming Headset, Black (SMPYFY-003) (Video Game)
i gave 5-stars because this is a very good headset in terms of value especially with the newly adjusted price drop (to $129 as of Jan 9, 2014). Know that Skullcandy acquired AstroGaming which make top-of-the-line gaming headsets in the A40 and A50, but are more expensive (albeit better quality) headsets. This review is based on PS3 and PS4 setups only (do not have PC or XBox so cannot comment on those platforms):
Pros: 7.1 dolby surround sound allows to locate enemies in FPS pretty well. 3 preset modes can tailor to your liking in terms of equalization. pretty comfortable (but i do not have big ears so those that mention the earcups are too small for big ears may have a point) even after long (3+hour gaming sessions). Battery life is quite long - easily 8-10+ hours on one charge. Receiver connects to PS3 or PS4 via USB and game audio is via digital optical. Will need to go into your sound and accessory settings via PS3 or 4 menu to choose Skullcandy headset and mic. Quick tip: if you use voicechat, raise your mic input level to the maximum setting (max = 5 in PS3) (see cons). Can charge headset via any miniUSB cable (can do this with a cable included into your receiver or via any microUSB charger). Cool design, plastic materials but well-constructed - appears pretty durable with normal use.
Cons: Mic level is pretty low. friends will say that cannot hear you well so you should raise the mic level just to be barely heard. agree that earcups could be a little bigger to accommodate larger ears/heads. analog stick for volume levels for game and voicechat is awkward to use and somewhat unreliable (would not attempt to adjust in-game, it will screw you up).
Overall, for $130 it is a GREAT deal. it is like a poor-man's Astro A50 which runs ($250-300 or $200 refurb). I upgraded from Logitech F540 Stereo wireless headset which had a much better mic for voicechat, but the 7.1 surround sound is more helpful in-game than stereo.
Buy this if you want: wireless gaming headset, high-quality 7.1 surround sound, great battery life
Do not buy this if: you have big ears, need HIGH-quality voicechat (where friends can hear you easily), do not need wireless, do not need 7.1 surround sound.

Amazon Customer says:
i can' t speak to the wireless gold headsets since i don't own a pair. you should read the reviews on the mic quality there, but i can tell you that mic quality is one of the weaknesses of these skullcandy PLYR1s....it's not so much the sound QUALITY but the volume that your party members can't hear you even on the highest output setting. also there is no monitor effect (meaning the effect when you speak into the mic you can hear yourself in your headset earphones) so you are never quite sure if you are speaking too loudly or if the mic is picking it up (although usually it is based on what partymembers tell me).
