Before the negatives, I have to say that I really enjoyed the book, picking it up and not putting it down again until I had finished it. The writing is good, with only a few typos. I am a reader who enjoys technical military details and this book had plenty of those.
The premise was great and roped me in from the start. I just wish that the same care applied to getting the details right had also been used with the plot resolutions.
Why are American Presidents in books and movies so often someone who 'commands' the respect of everyone around them for their towering intellect and charisma and who are brave and moral and always capable in a crisis, when the reality of U.S. Presidents is so often so far from this ideal? Why do aliens only ever bother landing in the U.S? In this case the aliens who were described as being of 'towering intellect' didn't even bother to scan the world for technology and as they preffered desert environments naturally chose the desert outside of L.A. simply by chance (to be fair they did choose somewhere in South America first).
I won't talk spoilers, but if you thought the ending of Independance Day was trite, the ending here was even more so.
It also suprised me that apparently the aliens had never encountered any form of resistance anywhere else they had colonized, because they lacked even the most simple of concepts like locks on doors, military patrols, motion detectors and the gathering of military intelligence. I get that hubris was meant to have been their weak point - but surely their arrogance was based on more than never having met any resistance before?
Let me repeat, I enjoyed this (until the last twenty pages) but I guess I feel let down by the very very simple solutions used to resolve the plot and that the outcome was never in any doubt at all.
If you have a lazy afternoon where you want the guys wearing the White Hats to win, then this is an enjoyable read. I will be keeping an eye out for more from this author, as his writing ability is great and with more care on the plot would produce a riveting read.
