First off I've played stronghold games for 10 years, so I'm no noob. I'll make it quite simple, it's a piece of trash, you pay to win and nothing more. Let me put you in perspective for you, in order to train pikemen, build a wheat farm, make a fletcher guild, and build decent stone castle. You have to spend at least 16 full hours on research and resource collecting, not actual building time mind you. The game goes 24/7 so your castle will most likely be attacked while your asleep or on vacation. You can however buy "premium tokens" which will run your castle while your off line.
Here is the actual math: If you pay 8 dollars on crowns, that will keep your castle running without you for a month, and you can get two card packs. Now lets do the math: if you play this game for 6 months and you spend 8 dollars per month, you will have payed 48 dollars. If you pay 8 dollars per month, for a year, it will be 96 dollars.
That's just for a player who wants to do okay at the game. If you don't, most of your castles will have unrest and be captured by other players. I've just covered "premium tokens", bored yet? It gets better, if you want to get ahead of the lords around you, and you don't like waiting around, and you don't have skill, this is the game for you! You can buy bonuses that include free research points and an instant research. A.K.A "cards". The single thing that ruins the game. Basically you can spend 80 dollars worth of cards, and have the the same castle, rank and soldiers as the free player who has worked on the game for 8 months. Bottom line cards are broken here is a video to show you http://youtu.be/Pmnt8nJu1o0 you can search ALL over the SK forums and find videos like this. These are free troops that you can buy with REAL life money and put in your castle. Cards make the game a terrible experience for new players.
If you want to try this game here is the absolute truth: it's very addicting, has terrible graphics, is all about politics, you will waste HOURS of your life, and you pay to win the game. And btw you will never win, they'll always be someone who buys their way to the top and kills you, even if you play non stop for 4 months. There is absolutely no skill when it comes to this game. At all.
I played this game for 6 months, And each and every minute I spent on it was a waste of life.
If you have no social life, and like people constantly trolling you, and have plenty of money to spend, this is the game for you!

Thanks for the review, I understand the fustration of playing a 'free' game where people who pay have a strong advantage over skilled player.

You do realize that all 'free to play' games work this way don't you? Your review is pretty stupid. You are complaining about the entire genre, not this game specifically. Yes, it is annoying that pay players have an advantage. But that is the genre. Your review is completely irrelevant to the game.

From the way you describe the game it seem to me you have either have barely play it and are exaggerating a lot or you indeed play for 6 month and barley grasp the most of the game mechanic.
I'll make it a little clearer to those that are reading this and assume that is how the game is actually is.

Research time varies (start out with research taking 1 minute then each additional research take additional times and yes it could end up taking 16 hours but by then you are in the end-game rank) as for the game is a 24/7 games. Yes even if you log off it is still happening but if you are worry about getting attach when you get attack (there are research that prevent people from attacking you, and so can go to sleep without people attacking you). As for taking a vacation, the game does offer a vacation mode now in which during that time your castle can't be attacked by player or AI.
Also all the wood collection, food harvest etc.... are fully automatic and does NOT require a premium token. All a premium token does it, allow for auto trading (of 1 product type goods only-you pick), scouting (only goods that spawn in your "parish" zone), attacking AI (its nice but if its against big AI your army will get wipe out so its better just to do it yourself after you scout it rather than the auto system sending your army at it). But all in reality it's a nice feature but does not affect the game really much as the amount of time it activate is 3hour+..... The majority of the people that get the perineum token is for the ability to place building and its subsequent building in the building queue otherwise you will have to build it and have it finish building before you can place another one.
Once again the castle will still run and you do NOT need to pay for your castle to collect wood, harvest food, make weapon etc....
Quote: "Basically you can spend 80 dollars worth of cards, and have the the same castle, rank and soldiers as the free player who has worked on the game for 8 months."
This statement is a Ridiculous LIE, to give you an idea of how long things take without any purchase of cards. To make a FULL stone castle (great tower -best tower in the game/along with all the other goodies) it only takes a castle around 30days to be 100% finish with the best stuff available.
Also if you pay 80dollar worth of "crown" to purchase cards pack. You have different option (random, industry, food, army and defense pack ) of which card pack you want BUT when you open the card pack you get 5 random card from that category. You have the option to trade in cards to get "card points" so you can the card you want BUT it is extremely costly to convert cards to cards point (it take 5card to get 25 card point or a little more if you get lucky)
To say that a player spend 80dollars to get to the same castle, rank and soldiers as the free player who has worked on the game for 8 months. Is a blatant LIES or ONLY if that person that been playing for 8 month did NOTHING or simply don't know how to play the game nor its mechanic.
Quote: "You can buy bonuses that include free research points and an instant research. A.k.a "cards"."
You can NOT buy free research point, you could buy a "random card park" and may get one buts its extremely rare. As for the instant research card once again its extrememly rare to get one in a card pack. You can swap in cards so you have enough cards point to buy it BUT it cost 300 / 500 card point to GET ONE. And considering its take 5 cards to get 25+ card point (if you are lucky you can get 25-35 cards point per trade in otherwise most of the time you get only 25 card points) So unless you have A LOT and i mean in the hundred upon hundred to the thousands this just isn't practical..... Also just to let everyone know there is a free in game way to get research point, they game allow player to get more research point by spending "golds" which you can get by selling your wood/stone/food weapon etc....
The sad truth is that is game revolve around a lot of politics and ALLIANCES in which you could find them to be a good or bad things (for they might help you with resource to build up your castle or rank up or be an enemy)
Along with be knowledgeable of how to dump your search point into which research as there are 4 research trees (industry, military, farming, education) and when you start you only have a limited amount of point until you rank/level up. So pick wisely I suggest some in each.
This game is very addicting, you could spend all day there waiting for your village to be build or you could just log in once or twice a day to check up on it and build more things. Just like most game the more time you put into it the more result you would get......Also the graphic is not what we would think for a game in this day and ages. It's pretty plain and boring but does the job.....

The Paul says:
The point is, the game is stupid. It is not a "free to play" it is a free to pay game. Yes I had a lot of friends on that game, and I was really good at the politics aspect of it. But it's a bad beta game. Sorry, but it's true. :/

But it is free!
Paul, like what L2012 said, many of your remarks in your review are not true. I've been playing since February and I rarely have gotten attacked. It was only when I went into a faction that things got dicey. Apparently I went into a faction who's leader double-crossed many people so I became a target. When I left his faction, I was safe.
There have been players who have been playing for a long time and have money to burn. They "card" a lot. This game does involve a lot of strategy, you can't assume sending 399 archers and a captain will capture a village 100% of the time. Premium players are able to use the research que and build multiple buildings in their village but it takes time. Yes, you can use cards to lower the time for both your castle and village but you won't be able to complete it for more than a week. If you build up your castle with all the research done, it can take at least 9-13 days without any cards. If your village is built up significantly, it could take a day or more to build. Again, strategy is involved. You could also say a minor advanatge if you have markets, you can auto-sell goods )if you're a premium member to gain money.
L2012 is right, there is a lot of politics and alliances if you go into a house/faction but generally, neutral players are left alone, unless they no longer play. You have to realize also, some have more than one account and they use that as spies.
I'm sensing you must of gotten attacked or have a chip on your shoulder. It's not the most graphically intense game but it does allow the time to pass quickly. I am actually in a faction with APB Reloaded buddies and have made some friends on SK as well.
Paul, you have a right to your opinion but you have to realize, your feelings and opinion should not be the basis of a review. The game is free as in free to download and free to play. Even the pay games, you could pay extra for premium content. To be quite honest, I have been only a premium player for 30 days (this past November 18-December 18; today) since I started playing in Feb '12.

Accurate and true. I played the game for months and spent around $30 and your review describes my experience precisely. A great disappointment to fans of Stronghold.
I would only add that people who continue to play this game are probably either suckers or idle shut-ins with a cruel streak.

Just because people like this game, you don't have to stereotype them by calling them suckers or idle shut-ins. Twit!

Tf2 isn't pay to win. Planet side 2 is a bit pay to win but not like zynga games.
Anyway nothing anyone said against Paul disproves the pay to win nature. P2W games inherently are broken as a player can simply pay to get to the top.

So it's still pay-to-win, right? All those good things you say about it, but a paying player still has a large advantage over someone who plays for free, right?
