Looking for a fun, silly break from the ocean of wizards and werewolves flooding the young adult book industry? Treat yourself to this Florida farce about an animal-wrangling family.
Unleashing Carl Hiaasen on my sons was a dicey option. Fearing Chomp would mirror his famous (ribald) books, I read it aloud as a bedtime book instead of letting them explore it alone. I'm happy to report the book is age appropriate for readers 10 and up. And funny! My boys embraced the main character, Wahoo Cray.
The story follows Cray's animal-wrangling family and their business association with the reality TV show "Expedition Survival" and its dim-witted star Derek Badger. I did my best to read Badger's lines with an Australian television personality's accent. My sons (ages 9 and 7) thought my voice work helped bring the book to life, so I encourage you try the same if this will be a bedtime reading in your house.
We plan to add to our bedtime reading booklist Hiaasen's other young adult books, Flush, Hoot and Scat.
More than a decade ago, I read four of Hiaasen's books, Skin Tight, Strip Tease, Lucky You, and Stormy Weather. They were crude but funny. The storylines have blurred over the years, but a few gems stick with me (a "weed whacker" comes to mind). Like those books, Chomp is a fun, breezy read.
In summary, this book isn't Hiaasen Lite. The author succeeds, no, he exceeds in delivering the sharp wit for which he's known without the expletives and adult themes of his earlier fiction. What is apparent from Chomp is that Hiassen's ability to mine comedy from his native Florida is still strong.
Rating: Four stars.
