Emotional and Intense,
This review is from: When Fate Dictates (Highland Secret Series Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
I've finished this book a while ago, on a transatlantic flight. Normally, I review fast, but with this book I had to take my time to think. Why? For 2 reasons: first, I was disturbed by it, and wanted to settle my emotions down a bit. Second, I wanted to get over the jet lag :)
Here are my reasons for giving the book a solid 5 star rating.
1. It's emotionally raw. I'm not quite sure how Elizabeth does it, but the events in the book scratched my soul from the first chapters. Yes, there's gore and death, and there's an innocent and defenseless maiden, and a rough brute; but it wasn't just that. The quality of writing is such that the emotions came through and touched me.
2. It's dreamy yet specific. It's probably just me, but I like dreamy, thoughtful writing; I love being taken by my hand and shown what the characters see and how they feel. This book delivered just this. It also delivered a well-researched and appropriately detailed historical setting. I gained new insights into the national characters that I had completely missed in my 2 years living in England.
3. It's romantic. I was a little concerned in the beginning that I got myself into reading a "girly" book (nothing wrong with that, of course, but I normally stay away from them), but soon I realized the book had much more to offer than what its cover might suggest. It does have historical romance; but it also has bar brawls, assignation attempts, rebellion, mystery and time travel. All that is presented in a pragmatic, no-nonsense way. I loved it, and began liking the characters even more for all the trouble they had to go through.
As an improvement suggestion, I'd have wanted the second part of the book to slow down a little and to once again take the time to hold my hand, delve on the feelings, emotions and sights. I loved the magic and the mixing of the eras, I simply wanted more details on how the events impacted our characters.
All in all, I highly recommend this book, and will be looking for more by Elizabeth.
