Wonderful, wonderful book,
This review is from: The North End Italian Cookbook, 5th (Paperback)
Being from Boston and having visited the North End many times was a nice connection, but had little to do with it. I was looking for simple recipes that my family would love. And this book hit the mark.
Most of the recipes and techniques described in this book are simple and require few ingredients. That fits perfectly with a busy family and cook who doesn't have a lot of time to spend standing at a stove or keeping "esoteric" ingredients that may get used infrequently. This book is about fresh, quality ingredients that complement each other in the final product.
As an example, I've been looking for a Marinara that's simple and that my family would love (they're used to jarred sauce - yuck!!). With slight modifications (4 oz. of water to thin it out a bit and 1 tsp of sugar to counteract acidity), I arrived at a concoction that the family raves about and asks for.
Whenever I look at a recipe that has an elbow-to-fingertip length ingredient list, I run. This book has allowed me to be adventurous, trying new techniques and tastes that I've loved in my favorite restaurants. Most importantly, my family enjoys them, too!
