This review is from: Neiko 10506A 1/2-Inch Reversible Variable Speed Hammer Drill Power Tool (Tools & Home Improvement)
I needed a powerful screw driver for very large- # 12 x 2 1/2" screws. For that purpose, i needed what i call a one half inch drill motor. The fact that it hammers was irrelevant.
My definition of a one half inch drill motor is one that runs- and is geared for- a max speed of 500 rpm. The trade is that, at that low speed, there is much torque as a result of the gearing.
This unit has a max speed of 2800 rpm. At the low end, where i would be using it for a powerful screw driver, because of the hi speed gearing, it wimps out.
By the time i have enuf power to drive the screw, i have enuf speed to drill a hole in the head of the screw.
It's heavy and well made, and i'm going to use it for other things, but it does not qualify for my definition of a 1/2" drill. More like a 3/8" motor with a 1/2" chuck mounted on it.
