Airline travelers - This bag is oversized!,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsonite Silhouette 12 30" Hardside Spinner Luggage (Apparel)
I purchased this suitcase in early July in preparation for an upcoming European trip. It is a beautiful piece, flexible but sturdy. Although I have yet to use it I am certain it would perform well. Unfortunately, I really should have done more research before my purchase on current airline bag restrictions. As I seasoned traveler I had known for years that suitcases had to be no larger than 71", the total of length, width and depth. Additionally, most airlines never even bothered to measure anyway. Things have changed. Most U.S. and large international carriers now cap the size at 62", including handles and wheels. Also, they are strictly enforcing these limits and charging confiscatory rates for oversized luggage. Delta charges $300 EACH WAY for anything over 62". This product, using Amazon's supplied dimensions, measures out at 64 inches. Using the airlines' method of including wheels and handles, the total jumps to 66 inches (my measurement). In short, you can roll the dice and hope the agent doesn't take time to measure but the penalty if you are caught is substantial. Again, my new suitcase appears to be a real winner in style and function but it isn't going with me to Europe or anyplace else I travel by air. I can't recommend a product that can only be utilized for ground transportation.

This is one of the most helpful reviews...ever! Not having traveled that much, with a huge trip coming in the future, I never would have thought about what airlines define as being "oversized". Would not have checked to see the current definition. Thank you for providing this information. Decided to go with the 28 inch model.

Extremely helpful and I feel your pain. I resolved that problem by never flying a domestic carrier to Europe. Legacy international carriers such as air France aren't as inflexible and don't charge as much when the have to be. Sometimes you need a large case.

Thankyou, who would have thought to add all these dimensions not to exceed
62". Much thanks. Lorraine

I always measure my bag's dimension and check with the airline's restriction and penalty. However, I didn't know I am suppose to measure the wheels too!
