2.0 out of 5 stars Irregular Flickering, September 26, 2011

This review is from: Lutron MRF2-600MTHW-WH Maestro Wireless 600-Watt Multi-Location Dimmer with Controller and Wallplate, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
Lutron came very close to a winning product here.

Criticism:

It introduces very irritating irregular flickering at all brightness levels other than fully on or off. The flicker is present with both incandescent and halogen bulbs, with either one or two 60 watt bulbs installed, and persists even when I disconnect / switch off appliances and other dimmers in the house. Both of the units I tried had the same problem. Perhaps the flickering has to do with noise in the power from my electric utility, but none of the other dimmers I have used on the same circuit before this one had this problem (including recent models with modern electronics). I would have expected a light switch as expensive as this one to be no worse than the cheap ones, but on this point it fails.

The back side of this unit is on the large side, so getting it inside the gang box is a somewhat tight fit.

The remote control's hard plastic parts fit together loosely and tend to rattle. This is pretty irritating when placed it near a speaker system.

The remote control on the first unit I received drained the original battery and a replacement battery within a week or two. The one that came with the replacement unit lasted for quite a few months, so I guess quality control on these things is hit or miss.

Praise:

It is compatible with both standard incandescent and halogen bulbs.

Switch and remote control operation are fairly intuitive.

Lutron support staff were responsive, though they failed to solve the problem.

S. Schwinn says:
Flickering of this type can be caused by:
1) Not using incandescent or halogen lamps/bulbs (e.g. LED, CFL)
2) Not enough load - i.e. a single 25W bulb

Nice try, but:

1) The flickering occurs with regular incandescent and with halogen bulbs, both of which are supposedly supported by this dimmer.
2) The flickering occurs with one or two 60W bulbs, so load is not the problem.

Hi, Pam. Thanks for offering, but I have called that support number two or three times since I bought the switch, and never reached anyone. After waiting on hold for over twenty minutes, I hang up. This claim of 24/7 support is obviously rather exaggerated.

Pam says:
Hi Forest,
I met with our product quality leader to discuss your issue. This is the first time he's heard of this dimmer kit flickering on incandescent or halogen bulbs. We are very interested in getting the dimmer and remote returned so we can determine the root cause of the problem. We will send you a replacement Maestro Wireless dimmer and Pico remote, along with a pre-paid return shipping label. Please call (610) 909-9347 to make arrangements for the return. This is a direct number to one of the staff members of the Lutron quality team.

Followup: Lutron sent me a replacement unit, and it flickers just as badly as the first. I'm a bit sorry I ever bought this overpriced switch. To anyone considering it, I suggest you thoroughly check for flicker before your refund period expires.
