A True Trumpet Giant,
This review is from: The Best Of Max Roach And Clifford Brown In Concert (Audio CD)
This is blazing Clifford Brown caught live in Los Angeles in April and August, 1954.
Don't know about the CD sound on the transfer, but the original vinyl was fine (bought it 3 times.) The Quintet is simply marvelous with Harold Land, Richie Powell, George Morrow and Max Roach.
Side 2 features Teddy Edwards, Carl Perkins,George Bledsoe and Max Roach. "Tenderly" and "Clifford's Axe" are all Clifford in a Quartet. Every cut is a standout and essential listening.
This was my introduction to the genius trumpeter at the tender age of 12. It was an instant love and the flame still burns today. He was possibly the most lyrical and emotional trumpeter ever. Just an incredible player, and from what I've read, a wonderful human being. I was so moved by this man, that years later I would compose a song in his honor called "CLIFFORD'S CHANT" along with my co-writer, Mr. Jim Miller. I hope and pray the world hears it someday, and gives Clifford more recognition with a whole new audience.
