2.0 out of 5 stars self-criticism, December 15, 1999
This review is from: Casing the Promised Land (Hardcover)
I am the author of this book. It has a few good scenes, but is essentially "roman a clef" nonsense that every writer has to get out of his system early on. Do yourself a favor and read ANYTHING else I've written (you'll be doing me a favor, too). Forgive the follies of youth.

Hilarious that you would review your own book! I appreciate your truth.

Despite what this early piece may or may not offer, I felt "The Alienist" and "Angel" were two of the best reads I've had in the last 13 years.

I would love to see more historical drama...perhaps Kreizler's youth leading up to becoming an "Alienist."

My two cents.

The Doctor says:
With The Alienist and Killing Time being two of the best novels I've ever read, I was thinking that I should purchase this one regardless of any bad reviews. Killing Time, after all, also has bad reviews, but I thought it was brilliant sci fi nevertheless, blending elements of a pure Jules Vernesque adventure into a prescient tale concerning the deleterious effects of the much over-hyped internet. Being that this comment comes from the author himself, I guess I'll respect his wishes, though I still doubt the book is quite as bad as he insists. Carr is, after all, the greatest fiction author working today, in my opinion, and my only complaint regarding his work is that there isn't enough of it. Caleb: if you ever read this, give up on the film version of The Alienist (it wouldn't be good compared to the book anyway), and instead give us more to read. Please. I know you want to be a screenwriter, but the plain fact of the matter is, you are simply too damn good of an author to waste your talents on petty screenplays. Would that you'd write a Victorian-era sci fi novel with a scientist as the main character!

I am a great fan of both Alienist and Angel. I yearn for a novel by Sara Howard as hinted at in Angel. I am quite fond of this group of detectives - if you will - and am sorry Mr. Carr that you've not turned your pen to another adventure. And so, I continue to re-read these two every few years. I always find something new - something previously missed. I am one of the folks who didn't care for Killing Time - but then, I'm not that huge a science fiction fan. I like ghosts, time travel and histporial crime dramas. To name a scant few. I am more into lighter weigh SF than you produced. So be it. Onward and thank you for those two books!

I love Caleb Carr's historical novels the period detail, depth of characterization are amazing; but humans crawl before they can walk, so only pick this one up if your interested in an author's development. He is so much better now!

Wow! I don't think I've ever read a self-review from an author. I'm just in the process of reading the Alienist and loving it. In respect for Mr Carr's request, I'll not read Casing the Promised Land.

I thank you for you for being so candid! It took me several days to finally remember your name, and when it finally came to me; I was ecstatic. My library only has the "The Legend of Broken" available for Kindle. But I was sorting through your titles to see which I might purchase. Your comment saved me money, when I do not have money to spare. For that, I thank you. Thank you Mr. Carr!
