DO NOT BUY THIS!!!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsonite 4-Piece Travel Set - Red (Apparel)I just sent my daughter off to Europe with her BRAND NEW Samsonite suitcase WRAPPED IN DUCT TAPE!!! The case had NEVER been used. She was thrilled to get it as a graduation present, but this morning she was in tears as the zipper literally unravelled. We had to be at the airport too early for stores to be open to buy a replacement. Now she will spend the next 3 months duct taping her beautiful new luggage closed everywhere. I purchased Samsonite for the quality. I will never make that mistake again.
I had originally rated this product 5 stars because it seemed like a good deal. Amazon won't let me change that - but I have changed the review. I WILL NEVER BUY SAMSONITE AGAIN! Zero stars!

Ah, I see Europe has not yet caught up with the USA by having suitcases available. They just got electricity over there though.

I can't comment on this suitcase specifically, but I am looking for new luggage and came across this review. The suitcases that I have been using for the last 9 years are Samsonite and I LOVE them. 9 years may not seem like that long, but they were with me when I studied abroad in Chile for 4 months and went ALL OVER the country. They've also been to Mexico (twice), Puerto Rico (twice), Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, San Diego, Las Vegas, Texas, and tons of small trips. They've been on countless flights, taxis, Latin American buses, and even a train. My Samsonite suitcases are top quality and I'm only looking for new stuff now because the wheel on the smallest one, which I've used way more than the bigger ones, got a chip in it so it's obnoxiously loud when I roll it and they're all a little banged up (appearance only). Maybe Samsonite has changed their quality since 2002, but don't rule them out completely because of this one review. If I could find the set I've been using for the past 9 years on here I would give it 5 stars and order a duplicate.

I stand by my post. These cases are the biggest pieces of crap ever to sport a Samsonite logo. You're better off buying a knockoff from the smelly homeless guy at the flea market. Somewhere along the line all the suitcase manufacturers got together and decided to use zippers instead of solid latches. Samsonite didn't even choose good zippers either; they use nylon spiral wound zippers. Go ahead and keep your 9 year old Samsonite. I'm sure it's better made than this model. This one is not worth the return shipping back to Samsonite. I will never buy Samsonite again. My daughter will never buy Samsonite again - and several of our friends have asked what brand fell apart on us so they don't make the same mistake. Samsonite did not stand behind their product and I will never stand behind Samsonite. It's been 2 1/2 years and it still elicits my anger and frustration. Do not buy this suitcase!

Mr. Dawson, since I am shopping luggage and you have a strong opinion about not making a Samsonite purchase, can you recommend another brand? p.s. sorry about your daughter's lousy luggage experience... that can really put a damper on the joy of a journey.

I can not recommend one brand over another. FEATURES that I would recommend paying attention to are zippers vs. clasps. That is the feature that failed in my daughter's case. Currently I have found an absence of clasps when shopping for luggage. They have all gone to zippers. And zippers are not all alike. Personally I trust clasps and hard shell suitcases. But even the hard shell cases these days are closed with zippers. So pay close attention to the quality of the zipper. Samsonite uses the spiral wound nylon type. It's my experience that the hard toothed interlocking zippers perform much better and take more punishment. At some point or another we all overload our luggage and even sit on it in order to close them. Look at the zippers or clasps and decide if they can take the stress of both overpacking and luggage handlers.
