Pure Newman: no frills, just chills,
This review is from: The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
Those familiar with 'The Randy Newman Songbook Vol.1' know what to expect. Which isn't to say that this second helping of Pure Newman doesn't hold any surprises. Most of the songs, now stripped from their arrangements, come out even stronger than before. For example, when you compare Newman's new rendition of My Life Is Good with the original version from the album 'Trouble In Paradise' (1983), you suddenly realize how in the latter case the orchestration gets a bit in the way. But there's more to it. In my opinion, the number one stand-out song from this new collection is Same Girl. I thought I knew this song by heart, and yet listening to it now it brought a tear to my eye. Nothing but Newman's voice and his piano - plus 30 years of life experience. No frills, just chills.
