This review is from: Screw Business As Usual (Hardcover)
First off, I agree wholeheartedly with the premise of the book. I agree that businesses can and should do more with the environment and social issues. This is what drove me to read this book. I was disappointed in how the book was written. I was hoping for a book explaining how to set up a sustainable business, or what companies can do to become more sustainable. Instead, the book is all stories. If you want a feel good book, this is a great one to read. If you are looking for a more serious discussion of corporate social responsibility (CSR), then this is not the book for you. Some of the parts of the book seemed to me like he was bragging about what he has done. I had to put the book down a couple of times because I got so tired of stories, and stories about what he and his company has done. Stories should provide the emotional support to a well thought out and argued book. This book was not well thought out and argued.

I was surprised that it was a collection of anecdotes as well. Before there can be a shift in business as usual, there needs to be a shift in consciousness within the leadership ranks. At the risk of sounding self-serving, you may wish to "Look Inside" a book I published last year. It provides a pragmatic, step-by-step approach to planning, leading, and organizing a mindful business from a position of greater consciousness. When I heard that Branson had published this book, I thought, wow, it will be interesting to see what he has to say about consciousness in business. I, too, was disappointed. Please take a glimpse at The Transformational Entrepreneur and if you have any questions, I'm easy to find on the internet.

Thanks!

Thank you for adding this comment. I haven't read the book yet (I was reading the reviews to see how others felt about the book), and I'd like to share a thought that occurred to me when you said, "I was hoping for a book explaining how to set up a sustainable business, or what companies can do to become more sustainable." My only thought on that is, there are so many different ways to set up a suitably sustainable business. You have to factor in what fills you with passion while maintaining your integrity and personal values, what hasn't been duplicated in your area to the point of over saturation, while combining all the other things in creating a business. As a business owner, I found talking to successful people in my community that I respect enough to ask them, "Okay, I have this idea_______. What do you think?" and going from there did me a better service in many ways than the MBA degree I earned or a decent chunk of the books I've read. I learned a lot of things that I didn't know that I didn't know and gave myself the opportunity to figure what worked best for me. You'd be amazed what you discover about yourself, business, and your ideas about business when you hear a story.
