Top Notch - Functional, Aesthetically Pleasing,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A Beautiful, functional, & well crafted child's coat. This is semi-formal attire but it's perfectly acceptable as an everyday coat. These are sold at Macy's (online only) for significantly more. This is absolutely a 5 star item despite the non-detachable hood.
The shell is a fine wool & supple (for wool) to the touch (shell is 11% wool, rest polyester blend). The pattern is a gray heatherstone. Stitching is solid. Interior lining is a warm & comfortable fleece with polyester along the bottom and inside the sleeves. The build of this coat stands out for its pricing. Children's clothing construction is too often subpar unless you're willing to shell out the cash.
The closure is a zipper - easier for children to work with. The closure also has 3-4 button snaps to hide the zipper. Ample pockets (5) including an inside pocket. The zipper moves all the way up to the chin area to create a wind-breaking collar. The exterior of the neck & chin area is polyester but the interior is fleece. An attached (not detachable) polyester hood leads off from the collar area. The kid doesn't complain about warmth/chills but we're not in the dead of winter yet, either. Surprisingly, the label says this is machine washable and the build comes off as durable.
I will warn that I am a "suit & tie" field professional. This dictates my perspective. *I* would wear this jacket for nearly every occasion including casual days. The formality level is at least two levels down from a dress coat (below that of a car coat) and far above a nylon/polyester special. The real-world color is more akin to a charcoal/dark gray. The craftsmanship shows. My child likes it & has no complaints so far.
I'm not an expert on child's sizing but my son is a large 5 year old (90-95 percentile). He fits a child size 6 easily but would outgrow it in less than a year. We bought a size 7; everything fits except the arms are about 1.5 inches too long. We rolled the sleeves up a bit and it's fine.
NOTE: It came with a Hawke & Co. matching knit cap, lycra/polyester/cotton blend perhaps. It was labeled as a "free gift" & attached to the zipper with the branding tags. Excellent accessory to stuff in one of the pockets. Get some gloves with longer wrist/forearm sections to seal out any drafts/snow.
