This review is from: Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action (Kindle Edition)
I read this book on recommendation of a teacher during Grad school. Now that I'm done with school, I really had the opportunity to read this book and grasp the concept. What I like is how simple the idea of starting with why. I've been able to incorporate this idea into so many conversations with employees of all levels in my organization and I've been able to listen to cues and identify behaviors that let me know if the person is truly committed to what they're doing or if they're going through the motions.
This book fell short for me in that it seems like the author has a deep connection with Apple. I think we all can agree that Apple is a highly innovative company and Steve Jobs, may he rest in peace, did a good job at communicating his vision-or telling his WHY- and getting the people in place to help him enact the vision-his WHAT and HOW people. However, I felt like I was being hit over the head with how awesome Apple is and how devoted their customers are. While this might be arguably true, I still felt as though there were other examples to drive the point instead of reading what felt like a whole chapter devoted to the awesomeness that is Apple. I really connected with the example of how Wal-Mart's and Starbucks' WHYs got fuzzy. It made so much sense to me and fully explained why I choose not to patronize Wal-Mart and would prefer not to go to a Starbucks.
I will say this makes for a great book if you have some sort of leadership book club at work. The concept is simple and it can't hurt to reinvorate the WHY of the people you have in charge.
