Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kindle: Amazon's Original Wireless Reading Device (1st generation) (Electronics)
Nope, it won't play movies or take messages for you. It's a device for reading, and not much else. (OK, limited free Web browsing, but it's still experimental). Yep, expensive, but you're paying for Amazon's various services along with the hardware.
For reading, this is everything I hoped for and then some. Bookmarks - notes - searches - the closest thing to reading physical books I've seen yet.
I've owned this for a week now, and have been reading every day, more than I've been able to in the past 5 months. I keep it with me almost everywhere I go, and can read at a moment's notice.
I've been putting reference books on this, which I see as being one of the most practical uses for the Kindle, and one of the things that transforms it from a nifty electronic novelty toy into a working tool.
Reading it is very much like reading a real book, except you don't have to funble with pages or worry about keeping them flat. Once you get going, clicking on the "next page" bar is as automatic as turning a page, and as non-intrusive. The refresh rates aren't instantaneous, but about as fast as it takes to get from one page to the next in a physical book. The text is incredibly clear.
One of the reasons I got this was so I would have a platform to read gutenberg books without having to print them out or read them on the computer. This does great with that, and if I need something more current, the insta-download books from Amazon are cheaper than the physical versions. And I think some of the Kindle e-books may not even be in print anymore.
I'm not sorry I bought this; I only wish I'd bought one sooner.
