I remember watching this movie in the theatre and was wondering WHY I considered this one to be "an ownable." I love the Speed Racer characters and loved the old cartoon series and after taking a comic course by the author/creator of the Flight anthologies and the Amulet... my eyes were opened to the sheer brilliance of storytelling by the Wachowski Bros. They have grown leaps and bounds since the Matrix trilogy. Those movies simply had Neo presented with conditions that made him ask, "uh. What's that? Who am I?". - Question-Answer Plots - Come on. I am willing to bet my life that all of you (who liked the Matrix) fast forward to all of the action scenes. Right!?! Speed Racer on the other hand BEGINS with a superb and complex intro/flashback that explains SO many plot points within a race! I mean, the W. Bros. explain Speed's early relationship with his brother, his passion for the sport, his parents, the villains, Trixie - all are explained within ONE RACE! Not boring exposition - but on the GO! This WAS a cartoon movie beautifully translated into live action... and the W. Bros. passion for the content real resonated in this film.
Everyone downs the movie...I mean everyone. REMEMBER, these are people who are just drawn/repelled by surface effects. The heart of the matter is STORY. The story is simple and that's OKAY!!!!! Think how simple YOUR favorite movies are. The hero's journey and so forth. The storyTELLING of THIS film was brilliant!!! I was NEVER bored by this movie and I'm happy I ignored the press and the terrible reviews. I just wondered how the W. Bros. could follow-up such a huge box-office success as the Matrix - and they did! If you're still wondering whether to buy or watch the film again you have to peel the onion to the core. I personally loved the visuals (I'm an artist. What can I say?) so they didn't bother me at all. There are a lot of "pretty" films that are quite boring and lack depth.
This is a simple coming-of-age film with a protagonist who's faced with two professional routes. Speed could either go the route his brother took and go corporate or he could stay with his family's independent racing company. The W. Bros. CREATIVELY explain what happened to Speed's brother and the choice that he made. The real plot of the film begins with the challenges of Speed against a major corrupt organization...all told through racing!!!!!
Give this movie a chance people. Believe me, this will be one of those movies that people will revisit and LATER get rediscovered!!
Keep up the great work Wachowski Bros!!
