Juvenile and Entirely Formulaic,
This review is from: Air Gear: Complete Box Set (DVD)The reviews so far on here are misleading. This series is entirely formulaic and hardly deserving of 4 or 5 stars. At absolute best it's only a 3 star series.
It's basically extreme sports, loosely based off of rollerblading and skate-boarding, with some magic thrown in. The main character is a bit of a loser, gross at times, and almost always juvenile. As others have mentioned, it's not for kids as there are adult themes and nudity (which also usually comes across as juvenile). There's the usual "protagonist taps into his hidden energy to pull something amazing off" stuff, but it's just hard to take the protagonist seriously since he is so juvenile and portrayed as a loser more often than someone you would actually want to follow or could respect.
The series reminded me the most of Get Backers (out of the fight anime I have watched). Except Get Backers had interesting protagonists, interesting villains (e.g. Dr. Jackal) and broke out of the Fight Anime mold with episodes like recovering the Stradivarius, the one about famous artists, the really hilarious episode with Ginji in the hospital, etc. They also actually go the Limitless Fortress in both seasons.
AirGear is Get Backers without the interesting parts, without the interesting characters, and literally without any resolution -- the whole 8 kings story arc was clearly meant for season two, which never happened. So on top of all of the formulaic action, contrived plots, 1 dimensional characters, etc. you also don't even get a decent ending.
My advice: pick up Get Backers instead.

This is like get backers? Ummm...how? The story, characters, & music (which plays a nice part in air gear) have nothing in common. I really don't know where you are coming from on this but that's cool. I personaly loved this. Mostly because I love to blade and this kinda appeals to me. I thought it was a fun fantasy with great music and yes....nice fan service (so i'm not a choir boy)! Btw, I love get backers cuz it's sooo much fun to watch. But, I don't think that they are even close to the same idea. It sucks big bottom that they canceled this series. I have just finished watching boring as Hell Girl and I'm really pissed that somebody would choose to continue another season of same old same old than air gear. I really liked the story.

Formula wise (and maybe the 8 rulers / 4 kings) it reminded me of Get Backers. Except AG goes the crude/crass route while GB rises above they typical fight Anime fare with story-arcs like the one about the famous artists, etc.

Air gear is like Get backers, like in the way both shows were never completed in the anime show. just like get backers you would need to buy the manga to get the rest of the story. that's it, the show was made to get people to pick up the manga to find out what happens next, that's it. just to bring you in to the world of air gear.

sorry man no disrespect just stating my opinion but the story line for the two I just could nto get into the getbackers what so ever I found that after watching air gear the art work even though it was hand drawn the story line for me was not that good. As well as the idea behind the two of getbackers made no sense how they got their powers, on the other hand on airgear I could see for the most part when their attacks where the way they are and it was a breath of fresh air to see something done anime wise that dealed with an extreme sport compared to an average sport or the same genre of fighting.

Yeah, Getbackers had it's weak points, especially regarding the background for the setting. But I thought other aspects more than made up for that. On the other hand, the ending story arcs for each season start to wear thin on repeated viewings. However, several of the small story-arcs were a lot of fun, and it's hard to top the episode with Genji in the hospital when it comes to comedic value.
The extreme sports take on thing is the only redeeming quality Air Gear has going for it. Instead of being happy that someone took an extreme sports approach you should be upset that that they did such a horrible job that it may be awhile before someone tries to do an another extreme sports Anime!!
Anyway, if I was going to sum things up, Get Backers had a sophisticated side to things, such as the story arc dealing with dead famous painters, the Stradivarius violin, etc. Air Gear went in the opposite direction -- e.g. did we really need to see the main character taking a dump?? Even if you don't like GetBackers that much, there were at least *some* episodes/story arcs that are 4 star material, and the "Genji in the hospital" episode is imo five stars. On the other hand, Air Gear feels like the creators struggled just to hit the 3 star material. It's too bad because Air Gear had so much potential!
And thanks for the comments!!

You do have a point Genji in the hospital was the highlight in that serious for me. But I think the way that airgear was written was not that horrid I would give it a solid 4 stars I mean the music combined with the animation I felt complimented each other. I mean did they have to show him take a dump not really and nor did I find it funny and there were some scenes that were juvenille but on the other hand I did find it intresting when fatty buccha came in on his A-T's as a tank since he is so large and he had the abillity to reshape his body. I mean I think the serious still has alot of untouched potential and even though it was not too popular in japan it did very well here in the US, UK and australia I just wish toei animation would realize that and finally end one of their other shows that put anime to shame.

If you think it is only a 3 star rating then you should have listed it as so. Giving it a 1 shows hatred for it. I'm going to give getbackers a shot. Never heard of getbackers. Next time I suggest you rate a show based on how YOU feel about it not how you think everyone else should, that's why they are OPINIONS.

My rating is 1 star. My point about 3 stars is that at best it's an okay series and anyone rating it above that is overrating it (imo of course).

I just ran through the entire series, I'd have to assume the manga is superior because the end is horribly disjointed and unforgivable (I think I'll take a stab at the manga).
Air Gear is entertaining (meaning it won't put you to sleep), so if you want some simple action/comedy/romance that sort of stuff is here. That said, characters have personalities but poor depth and the story is decent. I'd give it 5.5 - 6.8/10. Taking the five star system into account, probably 3 to 3.5 out of 5.
The anime just has too many flaws, and the new ova series looks like a simple cash-in. The females and how they interact with Ikki is quite entertaining, but it may player a bigger part in the episodes than it really needs to.
