What Happened to my Favorite Author?,
This review is from: The Best of Me (Hardcover)
If you've read any of my previous reviews, you know I'm a big fan of Nicholas Sparks. Even in his weakest books, I've managed to find something positive to say. Unfortunately, that's not the case with THE BEST OF ME. I don't know what's happening. I wasn't impressed with last years book, and was so hopeful that this year would better. Instead, it went the opposite direction, and was even worse. The book just seemed to be all over the place, especially the last third. I couldn't even follow who was who, where they were or what they had to do with the story. I never felt we got enough of Amanda and Dawson's backstory to care about them as a couple. How can the main characters have rooting value, if you don't even know who they are? The story seemed to be inspired by BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, as there were many similarities. It was very predictiable. There was no suspense, I knew how it would end before I was halfway through. I usually can't get enough of Nicholas Sparks, staying up late and reading his books rather quickly. This one took me three months to finish. The last part of the book was so much of a mish mash of goings on, that I skimmed over most of it, just to get to the end.
I miss the Nicholas Sparks who wrote THE NOTEBOOK and MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE and THE WEDDING, even THREE WEEKS WITH MY BROTHER. If these last two books are the type of stories we can expect from now on, my collection of Nicholas Sparks may have just ended with this one (I still own every one of his books in hardcover format, haven bought all of them on the day they were released (except for THE NOTEBOOK and MESSAGE since thats where I started after reading several positive reviews)). I don't know if he's run out of ideas or if he's trying to take his books in a new direction, but for me, it's not working and it seems like he's lost some of that spark that made him so popular in the first place. Maybe he needs to go back and read his earlier works again in order to be inspired to write the kinds of stories his fans love so much. I miss those stories and the connection to the characters. This book was so bad, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone - not even the most diehard of Nicholas Sparks fans, and it pains me to say that.
