Not bad - for sixty-year olds!,
This review is from: Music From Another Dimension (Audio CD)
I had really hoped that the return of Jack Douglas behind the board would kick this band in the a**, and we'd have another "Rocks" on our hands. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Sure, there are some solid rockers with their foot in the 70's, but overall, the riffs are rather tired, and have a heard-it-all-before aspect to them much of the time. Douglas has generally brought back the raw vibe that the band has been missing for a long time now, but it's pretty rote - in fact, I think I prefer the slicker, more vibrant "Just push play"! And the ballads!! Too many, and too sappy. Some of the early Aero ballads have been favorites of mine over the years: "You see me crying", "Home tonight" and "Seasons of wither", to name a few. Great when they are written by the band, not when they are penned by shlocky hit-makers like Diane Warren. Do they really need that input here at this stage in their career?? And the Carrie Underwood duet? Horrid, and an obvious play for a cross-over hit. Again, do they really need this now?? Generally, the band is strong in performance, and some songs rock like the days of yore, but overall....tepid. Really guys, take a cue from another band from your era who answer to no one but themselves, and continue to amaze: RUSH.

Agree with everything except for the Just Push Play part. I really like about half of this album, which is a lot more than Just Push Play. Even though I'm a huge KISS fan, I have to admit Rush has the best album of the year so far. Saw them last week and the nine songs they played from Clockwork Angels were amazing.
