The Seeing Eye,
This review is from: Sinking Creek Journal, an environmental book of days (Paperback)
Sinking Creek Journal is a lovely piece of personal writing, set in the pattern of a "book of days," a tradition in literature since the medieval era. Fred Waage has recorded, without sentiment or piety, events of a passing year in his region, the northeast corner of Tennessee. He sees the seasons wax and wane, the beauty of nature, and the sometimes brute destructions of society, yet his journal is not sermons but a succession of clear, cleanly distilled observations. Remarkably, he almost never uses the first-person pronoun, which is so typical of much self-centered nature writing. Instead, that missing "I" offers a view of nature that is watchful, respectful, and always humble.
