Is it too small to fit a folder or 8x11 sheet of paper without folding it? Yes.
Do I care? No.
I use this as a small purse. I'm only 5' tall so slinging a child's backpack over one shoulder doesn't look as weird on me as it might on, say, a 6'5" man. It fits a pair of shoes [for when I need to change out of heels]. It has a place for my water bottle on the side. It has an insulated pouch for my sandwich. For days when I don't need to carry a lot or I want an extra bag to travel with [love to keep it in my lap on a bus/train/plane with my travel documents, snacks, medication, etc; so I can keep larger bags stowed away], it's perfect! And the attention to detail on this thing is amazing. I have the fox - arguably the most 'grown-up' looking out of all the animals, in my opinion, due to it's minimal features and colors, trendy foxtails hanging off it, and Burberry-esque plaid ears - and didn't know until it arrived than the tan part of the mouth is corduroy and the ears are not simply flat pieces of fabric but instead stuffed like tiny pillows so they never droop down.
And while this might be too small for conventional children's needs like school if they can't fit books or large papers into it, I still think it would be perfect for a child to tote around other things to keep them busy when traveling or in the car such as games, toys, food, smaller reading books and notebooks, and so forth.

I can't say I ever thought to use one of these as a purse. My kids love theirs, so maybe I'll borrow one of theirs to see if it would work for me!
