This review is from: Siddhartha (Mass Market Paperback)
Siddhartha began as a respected Brahaman, then traveled with the samanas for years. He knew how to concentrate, fast, and meditate very well. However, the passages that follow truly show his ignorance. He has an affair, lives a rich, gluttonous, and sinful life, then he has a son that brings him grief. He should have never found interest in Kamala in the first place.

I don't think you understood the book very well.
Sure he could meditate, but meditating wasn't really getting him anywhere. That was the point.. he didn't see how it was any better than being a worldly drunk. He had to try both extremes before he found the harmony, the balance in between.
