The best travel hat I've owned,
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tilley Endurables TWC4 Outback Waxed Hat (Apparel)
I've owned a lot of hats, going back four decades. I've always searched for perfect "crushable" that stashes easily and comes out of the pack regaining its shape easily. This is the hat I've been looking for. It's comfortable right out of the box (assuming you've sized it right--a little roomier than your usual felt hat fitting), and it breaks in quickly. Although this waxed fabric is lighter (less oily) than the material typically used to permeate cloth rain gear and it is vented, the hat is still best suited to cool weather. I bought it in midsummer and set to set it aside until the Fall. I like the style/fit/finish enough that I'll certainly buy a Tilly better suited to hot weather. I haven't washed the hat yet, but it's endured the harsh weather without any problems. This hat is worth the money. Treat yourself.
UPDATE (several months later): Since the initial review, I've subjected this hat to all manner of abuse--machine washing, smashing down into a pack, and leaving it rolled in a pocket dampened after a heavy rain.. Every ill treatment seems to better define its character and make it a more serviceable and desirable hat. As the water repellency subsides, the hat becomes more breathable and cooler. Reapply water repellant sprays for protection in the cold months and let the treatment subside as the warm months progress.
This is the ideal hat.
